It is DONE!

Graverobbers is live.

After much cursing, throwing things and general malaise, the Graverobbers online demo is good to go for viewing.

(Baby steps, right?)

The physical book going to print this week, so I'm hoping the final will be ready for presentation and photographic documentation next week. What an insane process: three printers, three paper types, manual cutting, a cover which has to be sent to some other printer god knows where because its oversize and can't be done in-house, and finally, a "perfect binding" which may or may not destroy the entire book... forcing me to re-do everything. Cross your fingers for me.

For now, though, I present to you the online flip-book demo of Graverobbers. This is optimized for 1024 x 768 viewing. Folks on lower screen resolutions may have some difficulty. (And obviously, you need a flash player to view this.)

My apologies that I can't include a pop-up to open the page (Livejournal doesn't allow javascript). On the final Graverobbers Website, the flip book will load in a pop-up window, so you won't see all the whitespace of a full screen.

Check it out.

A couple of things to show off this evening (before I collapse).

Under Lock & Key: 200 Years of Banned Books and Censorship is an activist website currently in production that addresses the concept of censorship in the media, in particular, censorship in books. The site's being built with Macromedia Flash, Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver (CSS), and while the interactive component won't be good to go for another month or so, I've included some screencaps of the in-progress graphics below the cut.

You can also view the full project proposal (replete with references) at its place of permanent residence:

Secondly, the type component of Graverobbers v. 1 is finished. "Finished" as in I'll probably release a free copy to anyone who wants to demo it before the website launch, have them beta the beastie, and report back with the long list of kerning pairs that are undoubtedly still being problematic. (Please note the wry hint of my keystroke when I type that.) If you want to try it out, by all means, leave me a comment and I'll hook you up. The TrueType preview is below the cut.

Man, I'm tired.

The Graverobbers Mortality Type project has been extended (with the good graces of my professor) so I can continue working on the finer details of the printed component. Below are a few of the layouts I've been playing with.

As you can see, it's really far too easy to lapse into concrete poetry conventions. I'm not too keen on it (the first), actually. My personal preferences tend to lean towards a three-column grid that references tombstones, but I do like small caps thrown in to break things up.

Subtle is better? Yeah, why not. Might as well push the ephemeral bits while I still can.

Objective: Create a typeface using gravestone rubbings taken from St. Stephens cemetery.

The full gamut of this project, started unofficially over the summer of 2006, was birthed three weeks ago. The full run includes a fifty page book, interactive CD-Rom, website, and promotional posters.

Below the cut are the first things I can show: a triptych of promotional posters for the project. These are sized to 11 x 17 inches, but at final output, will probably be larger. (I intend to hog as much wall space as possible for this project, since the book and included CD-Rom are comfortably hand-sized.)
